Bagpiping

I started playing the Highland Bagpipe in 1986, while attending graduate school at the University of California, in Riverside. Heidi Hutchinson, a librarian at the university, was a member of the R. P. Blandford & Son pipe band, of neighboring Redlands, and she started teaching a class through a university recreation program.

I had been doing Highland Dance with my (then) wife Deborah through that program, until my legs gave out; I’d then taken up the much less strenuous sport of caber tossing. When Heidi started her class, I knew a good thing when I saw it and signed right up.

Since then I have worked as a soloist, performing for weddings, parties, parades, funeral services and numerous other ceremonies on the West Coast, the East Coast, and in the Midwest. Since my original teacher studied extensively with Seamus MacNeill, I play in the style of his College of Piping.
