Stuart Marine Engine

Type P5M

4 HP 2-Cycle Gasoline engine.

The schematic at left (click on it for a larger view) shows a two-cylinder engine; mine is the one-lunger variety. Aside from its infuriating tendency to flood if I even pass gas next to it, it runs pretty reliably...when it starts.

And it seems to be starting again, as of August 2007, and is back in the bilge. The sweeps are now for backup, thanks in part to Fairways Marine Engineers, heirs to the Stuart legend, who supplied a few crucial parts (but as of 1/6/08 are no longer in business, it seems) and to Belanger’s Auto Electric of Maine, who rebuilt the magneto.

Note the absolutely classy shift handle: it’s bronze, and looks cool sticking out of the cockpit sole.

Stuart engine. Stuart engine.
